Question by timbertopper81: Flying on Alaska Airlines and want to upgrade?
If I buy a ticket at the “bargain” price, and seats in first class are still available 24 hours prior to departure, can I use web check in to upgrade to first class? Or is that feature unavailable to people purchasing the “bargain ticket”? I’m aware of the fee ranging from $ 50 – $ 150 associated with the upgrade…but its a small price to pay when its a long flight. Thanks!

Ussualy they will offer upgrades only to people at specific fares levels at first, but if they are still not filling up then anyone can upgrade there ticket at the airport.

If there is room available, they’ll be happy to upgrade. After all, it’s more money for them.
However, that close to departure, it’s unlikely there will be any room left in 1st Class. MVP Gold’s (frequent flyers) will probably lock them up.
Alaska’s paid first class upgrades are available through online check-in at the same price as they’d be offered at the ticket counter. The bargain tickets are eligible for the upgrades just as any other paid ticket would be, so long as space is available.
Whether they’re available or not is, of course, dependent on the number of seats left in F — you’re more likely to find it available on their shorter routes then on their transcon routes (where paid F and elites are more likely). If you check in right at 24 hours, though, you stand a better chance of snagging one than if you wait.
I fly Alaska Airlines extensively. Paid upgrades are available within 24 hours of flight departure through Web Check-In, or on the day of departure at the following Alaska Airlines airport locations:
–Check-In Kiosk (with Credit Card Only)
–Departure Gate (with Credit Card Only)
Seat availability depend on the number of paid First Class seats, as well as the number of free upgrade requests made by MVP and MVP Gold members. MVP and MVP Gold members can request upgrades at the time they purchase their tickets, and typically receive confirmation 48-hours in advance of departure.
Good luck. Alaska Airlines has great service!
